Tips for remote working meetings

Since our first day in business, we’ve been big supporters of remote working, allowing our team to work from home a few days a week so we’ve become pretty good at running meetings while working from home and we wanted to share a few tips.

Phone or video, which is better?

The truthful answer is: it depends.

If you want to quickly catch up with a client, a phone call will probably do the trick.

Video calling allows you to do things like screen-share with a client and still have the face to face element during the meeting, even if at a distance.

Here are a few tips to make the most of video calls:

Position is key

Sitting yourself in a good spot sets you up for a good video call. Be aware of available light and use it to your advantage. Sit facing the light source to avoid your face being shrouded in darkness.

Also, sitting closer to your Wifi router will help maintain a steady connection and good video quality.

Test your equipment

Before you make a call with a client, do a test call with family or friends to ensure your camera, microphone and speakers are set up correctly. Also allows you to familiarise yourself with the video calling software, which brings us to…

What should I use?

There are many options for video calling. They all mostly do the same job with a few minor differences. Here’s a quick run down:

Google Meet

It’s free to use, no installation required and doesn’t require a Google account. You can create a meeting link and email it straight to your client.

Zoom

Zoom is popular with companies these days. It’s a very nice service and free to use. However, it does seem to require software installation for both callers which isn’t handy when trying to make a quick call with a client.

Whereby

Another free web-based solution which doesn’t require any installation. Like Google Meet, you can simply email a link to a client and they can join your call.

Skype

Skype is probably the most well-known out of these options. It does require an app and an account to use but it comes pre-installed on Windows so you may find this works best for some clients.
